Module 2.1.1 · Phase 2 Decision · Step 2.1 Fairness DefinitionCore
Fairness Definition & Trade-Off Decision
What counts as fair for this system?
Records a deliberate choice of what counts as fair for your system, since many fairness definitions cannot all hold at once.
What it does
From a decision-tree shortlist you pick a primary definition and secondary ones to monitor, resolve their conflicts and set the balance between fairness and performance. The decision record sets the target for measurement and mitigation.
Why it matters
This step selects the applicable fairness definition(s) and explicitly documents the trade-offs between competing fairness objectives and system performance. It ensures that impossibility constraints and value judgments are made transparently and with accountable human oversight.
