    Causal Modeling Template

How does a protected attribute reach the outcome?

Maps how protected attributes reach outcomes in a directed acyclic graph, so you can explain where a disparity comes from.

    What it does

You place variables by role, draw the causal links and judge each path from a protected attribute to an outcome as fair, problematic or unclear. The validated model feeds the Counterfactual Fairness Tool and the Intervention Planner.

    Why it matters

This step constructs an explicit causal model of the system, identifying relationships between protected attributes, features, and outcomes. It distinguishes legitimate causal pathways from problematic ones, providing a principled foundation for intervention decisions.

Step 3.1, Causal Analysis, in the Intervention phase.

    How to use it

    In the Fairness Navigator Beta

Work through the steps in order. Several modules open from the Navigator's steps and hand their results back.

    On its own Live

Open 3.1.1 from the platform's Modules page and run it when your project needs it. Work is saved with the assessment.
